August 16, 2020 – Rain, Rain, Go Away

Is all this rain because of Kyle? It’s crazy. The chance of rain today – 15% or less and yet, it rained most of the day. Last I looked at the rain gauge, the total accumulation over the last several days is 3.25 inches.

Even the hummingbirds are at their wit’s end: sword-fighting and jousting and taking their competitor to the ground. I captured their antics here. Have you ever seen anything like this?

Today’s harvest

The day wasn’t a complete wash. We had a nice harvest of tomatoes and peppers. Green tomatoes were picked to save them from splitting like our sweet little melon.

The bush beans had a rough start this spring. The first plants never recovered from the frost. The second planting of the beans are healthier but no real harvest. I’m ready to call it quits, but Dick wants to give them more time.

The new strategy is to pick all the pods, no matter the size, and see if it will convince the plants to produce more. If we’re lucky, we might get enough for one meal.

The sunflower’s poised to bloom any day.

I am drying cucumber seeds to plant next year.

Between rain showers, Dick and I worked on finishing one of the end caps of the hoop house. Flitches, wood planks with bark, cover the bottom half of the back end cap. A creative touch used for the raised beds and compost bin.

It’s raining, again

I predict Dick will be making chainsawing art before the end of 2020.
