August 20, 2020 – Tomatoes and Tables

It’s all about tomatoes: tomato plants, tomato fruit, tomato sauce, and tomato tables.

Overrun with tomatoes on the counter, in the freezer, I cored and scored and processed them in a hot and cold bath, peeled the skins and made tomato sauce.

Dick cut the lumber for four tomato tables for the hoop house, 16″ x 72″. The legs were either 12″ or 18″ to create a bleacher effect.

Finished in the kitchen, I worked with Dick to assemble the tables. They came together quickly. It was the hardware cloth that took time to cut, pull tight, and staple to the top.

The UV flashlight arrived – tonight we’ll go on a hornworm hunt.

The tables are staged in hoop house, ready for tomorrow’s delivery of potted tomatoes from the back deck.

We built more tomato tables like the first one

Tonight we had stuffed green peppers with fresh tomato sauce. There’s something special about making meals with the food you’ve nurtured from seed to table.

The UV flashlight works great on finding nasty pests. It revealed the Mother-of-all-Hornworms!! And, one that the wasps found and quickly dispatched.
